Transportation
Established in 1982, Garry Mercer Trucking (GMT) provides freight services between Ontario, Canada, and the U.S., as well as full warehousing facilities in both countries. The company is growing, but the current legacy accounting and software package, Sage 300, was growing outdated and would not allow GMT to meet its strategic goals. With limited internal resources to select and upgrade to a new system, GMT turned to MNP to help them implement the right solution.
Garry Mercer Trucking was told that Sage 300 was not going to be able to handle the volume of transactions the company was doing. The company wanted data-driven insights and, although they’d originally planned to only update hardware, they decided it was a good time to modernize across the board. Needing a partner with expertise in these areas and having worked with them on the accounting side already, they turned to MNP.
Finding an affordable solution that made financial sense was important to GMT. The finance team also wanted to be able to easily drill down to get real-time, up-to-date information. Upgrading the financial management system would help the owners and the finance team make stronger decisions today — and make the business more attractive to potential buyers should the owners decide to sell in the future.

MNP met with GMT for a series of discovery sessions so they could better understand current and future-state requirements. After reviewing several options based on their learnings, MNP recommended Sage Intacct. After showing the GMT team how it would meet their needs, GMT agreed that it was the right solution.
MNP led the setup, configuration, and optimization of Sage Intacct, managing the project and data migration from start to finish. Post-implementation, in-depth training was provided to staff every Tuesday and Thursday for weeks to ensure adequate knowledge transfer and roll-out support.
GMT was also given a sandbox environment that stayed open for six months after implementation. This allowed the finance team to explore the system’s capabilities without worrying about damaging the live environment.
Immediately after go-live, the finance team started to realize the benefits — including no more flipping between legal entities — and on-demand financial metrics. As well, utilizing a function built by MNP, transactions from their external fleet management system can be imported to Intacct with a single click.
When a new person was hired to handle accounts receivable, GMT arranged for five days of training with MNP. MNP created an action plan tailored to the new hire’s lack of knowledge about ERP systems and ultimately set them up for success with Sage Intacct. GMT’s Chief Financial Officer also receives ongoing support, meeting with MNP to discuss the system and its capabilities for about an hour a month as part of their Customer Success Program.
Because monthly financial statements are already converted into Canadian currency, Sage Intacct is saving GMT 12 days a year in preparation work. It’s also faster to find necessary information, which can be shared immediately. Finally, as the ERP system is web-based, employees can work from home, or anywhere, reducing the costs of absenteeism.
