Digital Oceans Canada: Creating a highly secure innovation platform for digital twin development and operations

Challenge

Energy Research and Innovation Newfoundland and Labrador (ERI) and Canada’s Ocean Supercluster both strongly support innovation in offshore ocean industries, including oil and gas. To accelerate organizations’ ability to innovate in an affordable way, ERI and Canada’s Ocean Supercluster were interested in creating a cloud-based platform that provides a more cost-effective and collaborative way to experiment and operate digital twins.

Solution

MNP Digital was engaged to collaborate in a discovery phase and transform the learnings into an implementation plan. MNP Digital then provided overall program management and was the principal lead agency for the delivery of the platform. The platform itself was designed and built using Microsoft Azure, taking full advantage of the benefits of cloud computing. The platform also empowers research and development, leveraging pre-built data models to support artificial intelligence, machine learning, and process modelling.

Results

The now complete Digital Oceans Canada platform offers data models that accurately reflect ocean conditions, including vessel models, reducing the need for expensive, and often dangerous, physical sea trials when validating technology. This drives innovation, enhances value creation, and reduces time to market by providing digital twin technologies and data to Canada’s offshore industry. The collaborative solution also allows for shared costs, tools, and data, which significantly accelerates the deployment of emerging digital solutions.
